Mr. Wilkins' Professional Biography

Bryan Wilkins is an elementary music teacher with a passion for fostering a lifelong enjoyment of music through the development of musical skills. A certified specialist in the Kodály approach, his teaching draws upon the teaching methods of Zoltán Kodály and American folk music traditions, seeking to develop proficiency in the 18 domains of musical skill. He has taught general music, choir, band, and elementary strings courses in the Sherwood, West Linn - Wilsonville, and Scappoose School Districts of Oregon.Mr. Wilkins holds the Bachelor of Music Education cum laude and Master of Education degrees from Portland State University, where he completed his studies with Prof. Debbie Glaze, Dr. Ron Babcock, and Dr. Ed Higgins. He also completed his Kodály Certification at Portland State, studying under Dr. Susan Brumfield, Carol J. Brown, Dr. Katalin Kiss, Dr. Andy Paney, and Lenci Igo. Mr. Wilkins' research in music education has focused on the development and implementation of assessment frameworks in general music based on the National Standards for Music Education. He has presented on this subject to music education students at George Fox University and given workshops for the Southern Washington & Oregon Kodaly Educators. His most recent work has focused on the use of manipulatives and visual aids to energize musical study.Mr. Wilkins remains actively involved in professional organizations of music educators. He holds membership in the National Association for Music Education, the Oregon Music Education Association, and Organization of American Kodály Educators. He has served on the executive board for the Southern Washington & Oregon Kodály Educators since 2008.

When not teaching music, Mr. Wilkins enjoys reading, cooking, hiking, running, and spending time with friends and family.
