General Music in the Fifth Grade explores elements of rhythm and melody with sophistication and complexity. An emphasis is placed on the development of an holistic personal musicianship. Instrumental study is continued through work with the soprano recorder that began in fourth grade. Specific goals include:
Consistent use of the singing voice in the head voice register
Navigating early stages of voice change and associated pitch challenges
Development of part singing through rounds and canons
Review of known rhythmic elements
Recording musical ideas in stick and standard musical notation
Composition activities in stick & standard notation
Improvisation on the soprano recorder (suspended for 21-22 due to COVID-19)
Listening development with art music of major composers
Knowledge of band & orchestra instruments
